In short

When this cross shows up in the light
You can notice what isn't working in someone's behavior and say so plainly, without dressing it up.
When this cross shows up in the shadow
Your honesty about other people's behavior may land hardest on the very people closest to you, and it doesn't always warm the relationship.

Full breakdown

Gates: 10 Behavior of the Self, 15 Extremes, 17 Opinions, 18 Correction. Gate numbers: 10/18, 15/17.

The Cross of Behavior is quite different from the previous one — it isn't about searching for the right behavior. Here, Gates 17 and 18 replace 46/52 in the unconscious, bringing a real capacity for criticism. Gate 18 is the gate of taste and judgment, able to decide in the moment what it likes and doesn't. Gate 17 does the same work on an intellectual level — the gate of opinions: 'I believe I like this, and not that.' Both gates do essentially the same job — pointing out to others what their behavior should be.

Still, we need these people, because someone has to point out problems in behavior, and this Cross genuinely does that, aimed squarely at it. Being a 4th line, though, they'll usually say it only to their friends — which doesn't exactly warm up the relationship, since Gate 46 and its warmth are gone. It's a bit like a dog that grabs your pant leg and won't let go.

Many people actually need someone who'll needle them right up until the end. It may be part of your design that someone in your life will do exactly that, and if they do, it isn't unfair — it's simply what you need. Life after life, there may be someone in your path loading you down with advice about how to behave, until you finally get it right.
