The Unexpected, which leads a person either toward power in Gate 31 or new experience in Gate 41, disappears as we move into the Cross of Risk. These are people who take risks whenever they can — kicking the box, so to speak, because that's what they're here for. They're always chasing a rush: 'wow — I survived!'

The nature of their risk-taking, though, is rooted in real need. With the Sun in Gate 19, there's real pressure to secure necessary resources — a very fixed, ongoing geometry of risking constantly to get what's needed. These aren't compulsive gamblers exactly — drop the word 'compulsive' and you're left simply with players. There's a real taste for the game here: 'I might as well put money into some new technology and try to make a fortune overnight. Better to take the risk, because if it pays off, it'll give me a sense of purpose — I'll feel amazing.' So there's a genuine pull toward risk, and it's often a blind one.
