Full breakdown

The second variation of Obscuration makes it very hard to stay focused on the strictly logical. With the conscious Sun in 61, these people can inspire simply through their fog — that's just what happens. Of the two sides of 61: its exaltation is universal principle, inner truth, the deepest occult knowledge; its fall, tied to Venus, is pure obscurity — total disinterest in universal principle.

So Obscuration pulls attention away. These people want to know the deepest things and end up knowing only a fragment of the hazy — then try to blow that fragment up into something whole, some general law. With the unconscious Earth in 3, the gate of difficulty, they struggle to actually establish that law, even while being deeply influential in the process.

Look at the New Age magazines and you'll find real vagueness — a detour from the actual point of it all, which is simply knowing yourself, because there's nothing else. But people fall into all that haze and pay for it. I know the sacrifices my own Human Design students make materially, and I respect that. But some people make the same sacrifices for things that are extremely vague and, in the end, worthless. We need this energy, but this is what obscuration does with it.

I'm not making a moral claim here — 'they're bad, let's get rid of these dark people.' The point is to understand what they're doing: instead of settling on knowing God, they get too frustrated and never quite get there — so if they can know something obscure, that becomes their holy grail. 'I don't know God, but I can read your palm.' They dig into the obscure and carry it out as their inner truth. What's genuinely good here is the sheer range of what they gather in — the world is extraordinarily varied, and this energy holds a lot of it.

Right-angle people live their own fate without any drive to push it onto anyone else — it happens in their lives, but it isn't their motive. Left angles expect it, and because they influence others, they always create the possibility, or impossibility, of access to one thing or another. 'Dark' people pull others into obscurity — that's simply their job. All those people's resources and energy then flow into it. That's what Obscuration carries: a reminder that we don't always see what we're meant to see. Something stands between you and the truth — and these people can be genuinely inconvenient, because they can lead you off the path toward truth and onto the path of obscurity instead.
