In short

When this cross shows up in the light
You know how to see clearly which pattern of behavior actually works for you personally, and follow it confidently, instead of borrowing someone else's template.
When this cross shows up in the shadow
You may find it hard to stay for long near what irritates or oppresses you — you tend to separate sharply instead of slowly adjusting to it.

Full breakdown

As we saw in the second quarter, crossing into the left angle brings Separation, which keeps insisting other people's experience simply doesn't fit us. This theme was strongest back in gate 35: 'I'm unhappy because of you. My car's broken because of you. The weather turned bad because of you.' But once the emphasis shifts to gate 5, where the Sun sits, everything changes.

The point is no longer just realizing someone else's experience doesn't fit — it's about the pattern itself: 'I don't want to follow your model, because it doesn't work. Mine does. I'm separating from your model.' Humanity is diverse and needs different models — most of us work by day, but we also need people who work by night. That variety matters. Separation is genuinely valuable, because it helps generate new patterns, different patterns, patterns that refuse to be absorbed into the mainstream.

Gate 47 plays a crucial role too, always searching subconsciously for meaning and often feeling oppressed as a result — oppressed by the outside world, or by themselves. So when they see a pattern that doesn't work, that's exactly the lens they view it through: 'it oppresses me when people crowd around while I'm eating breakfast — I can't stand that.' With separation, you simply change the pattern, follow your own, and discard the rest — which often means literal separation: 'get out of my life, I don't like you cluttering my breakfast.' Something along those lines.

There's a curious tension between gates 47 and 22 — one of the more amusing polarities on the Wheel: 47 carries heavy abstract oppression, while 22 sits waiting for love, openness, and attention. They're deeply different and yet, in their own way, a profound mirror of each other. Gate 22's grace is exactly what allows a different model to take the lead, be tested, and be separated from if it turns out unworkable.

We're always searching for new, different models. Separation delivers experience to us through gate 35 — the gate of different models. We all end up subject to patterns first established by people carrying the 15/5 channel; we meet people with that channel, or with 5, or with 15, or some combination, exactly because we need them in our lives. We can't live without patterns, without habits, and these forces are genuinely valuable for finding the patterns reliable enough that we can look ahead and say, 'good, we're safe, everything's going to be fine.'
