Irony is a tool of distance. You're able to look at a situation a little from the outside and see what people caught up inside it can't. That gives you a particular kind of wisdom, and sometimes a sense of humor.
What matters is not confusing irony with detachment. When you're actually engaged, life becomes real. Irony as a permanent shield against engagement is a way to avoid pain — but also a way to avoid depth.
