PHS: Motivation

Motivation is a PHS variable calculated from the Personality Sun and Earth — from the conscious part of the chart. It doesn't answer the question of "what" motivates you in terms of content, but the question of "through what" — through which inner feeling your energy turns into real action.

The six colors of this variable — Fear, Hope, Desire, Need, Guilt, and Innocence — each represent a separate psychological mechanism for triggering action. Inside a color, the Left/Right arrow shows whether that feeling operates through strategy and foresight or through an instant, instinctive reaction in the moment. An important feature of motivation is that the colors often disguise themselves as one another — for instance, genuine Guilt can feel like Hope, and Fear can feel like Need, and telling them apart requires an honest look inward.

This variable is especially valuable in psychological self-work: it shows not what a person wants, but WHAT exactly makes them want it — and knowing your genuine motivational mechanism helps you avoid confusing it with someone else's or with something borrowed.
