In Uncertainty, the very idea of making a contribution runs into trouble, because it carries a fear rooted in the emotional system — the fear in gate 55, the fear of never climbing out of the dark, the fear that no matter how civilized a person becomes, the animal underneath never quite disappears. That animal is gate 59's force, calling a person to find their spirit through sexuality.

Something genuinely strange sits at the root of Uncertainty: a whole system of dowries, gifts, and talents. All of it traces back to this cross, because there's a material contribution that has to be made to guarantee the right spirit and the right closeness — 'give me seventy-five sheep and your daughter, and I'll be happy.' This is where that comes from, dealing with a real uncertainty rooted in gate 55, part of the Sleeping Phoenix, and famously moody — paired here with three of the four individual gates, which adds a real dose of melancholy on top.

Gate 14's first line, which insists 'money isn't everything,' is absent here — instead we get 14's raw call: 'wealth belongs to us, we must own it.' Rather than simply finding spirit through sexuality, as in the first quarter, this is about being needed — the charming little house with the picket fence. The civilizing factor sits on top of the core sexual drive here, insisting that contribution and material wealth must follow from it. Underneath, the uncertainty always comes back to one unconscious question: will I get the right partner, or won't I?
