The third variation puts the Sun in gate 48, the Well — the gate of depth, the place people go to draw genuine resource up from underneath the surface. There's an old story about a guru offering a king a handful of straw and promising to turn it into gold — a perfect illustration of the shadow of this gate, the seduction of promised transformation without the real depth to back it up.

Ra liked to tell his own version of this: his father had wanted him to become a doctor, a respectable, well-defined path, and Ra went a completely different direction into depths his father never anticipated. That's gate 48's real tension — the pull between the well everyone expects you to draw from and the well you actually have to dig.
