Gate 48 — The Well — A necessary and sufficient (qualitative) foundation is the precondition for establishing the common good

We're in a collective process. Hexagram 48 is part of the channel of Talent, the channel of Depth. It's a component of the logical process of correction and improvement, and, as I noted when we looked at gates 57 and 18, gate 48 is the gate of Frustration. It can hold depth, but depth without expression, without the chance to experiment, leads to deep frustration. This kind of frustration is familiar to anyone caught up in a creative process, and it comes from having no chance to experiment, from not being able to see whether your depth is going to lead anywhere. Gate 48 is the gate of black magic — this is the well. It's the darkest place you can find anywhere in a chart. Filled with deep, murky secrets. We talk about black magic in the sense that this knowledge doesn't necessarily get to manifest. "I know how to turn straw into gold, if only you'd give me enough money to build the equipment I need for it." Gate 48 says, "I've got this," and looks around for gate 16, asking: "Can I actually experiment with this? Will you fund the project?" Incidentally, the devices that can turn straw into gold might end up costing far more than the finished product — but that's a whole other story.

In the gate of Depth, frustration always lives there. "Is there even a possibility? Can I get to the Throat? Can I actually express myself? Will I ever see what this experiment leads to?" Remember, frustration is one of the most important aspects of the logical collective process. Logic has a hard time finding a motor. The three logical gates in the Throat have no direct line to energy. Which means we'll form committees and grow bureaucracy, we'll hand out endless recommendations about how such-and-such could be done, and of course a deep frustration will settle into the collective. Why can't we just do it, instead of just talking about it? Frustration is part of our logical process, and its source is gate 48. Since getting the energy logic so badly needs is genuinely difficult, frustration is inevitable, even necessary. By its very nature, it's a driving force. A constant, ongoing tension — gate 48 sits in the Cross of Tension — is necessary, otherwise gate 48 couldn't hold its position: "I've found depth. It needs an outlet." This is collective, and it has no personal direction to it. The need to share your depth, to divide it with others, always comes bundled with deep frustration.

Gate 48, the Well, the gate of Depth. It carries the possibility of recognizing vital information as a pattern — it gives a way of becoming aware of life information presented in the form of a pattern. What's vital gets determined by gate 18, which has the gift of recognizing what needs correcting or improving. That's what's vital. Here's what often happens with gate 48: the vital turns into a mundane triviality, a banal nothing — each line can flip into its own polarity. Hidden away in the depth there's an enormous amount of junk.

I happen to have what's called a photographic memory, so I remember not only whatever might look important from the outside, but also the most absurd and useless information you could imagine — jingles and radio ads that played twenty-five years ago. I remember things people assume nobody remembers. The Well is filled with all kinds of stuff. Not only what we consider valuable, meaningful truths. It's also full of junk and outright garbage. This connects directly to talent. Talent can be wonderful, and it can be kitschy. The awareness available in gate 48 is correction stored as a pattern. Depth, at its fullest, can be described like this: "We know what needs correcting. Here's a pattern to work on. Now we go deep and see exactly how it can be done. And then we pray we run into gate 16, so it can find an outlet and our experiment actually happens." A genuinely difficult task for logic — actually experimenting with a pattern.

Please take in the meaning of these terms, because most people don't understand what "white" and "black" magic actually mean. What are gate 48's tasks? Working out what the correct pattern actually is, and understanding form. Understanding form is the same thing as understanding pattern. Black magic is exactly this: understanding a pattern in a way that gives you an advantage over other people. In other words, simply manipulating someone's understanding of something. That's what gets called "black magic," and in most cases gate 48 is aware of patterns other people either aren't aware of or simply don't know. Since these gates have to search for ways to express themselves, they use the patterns they know to their own advantage. In this sense, I consider astrologers black magicians. When an astrologer gives a reading, they're holding a chart you understand nothing about. They'll tell you exactly what's in it, because the power of that knowledge is on their side, and you don't have that power. That's how black magic works. And you have no way of confirming or refuting what you're being told. All that's left for you is to accept their knowledge, and your own ignorance.

Human Design is nothing like that. Human Design isn't black magic. It's knowledge of form, and it's available to anyone. So when a Human Design analyst lays your chart in front of you, you can understand exactly what's being talked about, exactly what's being pointed out. That's the fundamental difference between these kinds of analysis. And by the way, I'm not implying black magic is bad and Design is good. It's only about getting the terms right. In gate 48 you're dealing with a pattern — this is the channel of talent, meant to flourish in the collective — with a depth that can carry enormous value for the collective.

When we worked with gate 18, it spoke about vigilance and the determination to defend basic, fundamental human rights. Let's not forget that's its essence: standing up for people's original and basic rights, correcting everything that denies or rejects them. When you move up to hexagram 48, it speaks of a necessary and qualitative foundation being the precondition for the common good. Without depth, without recognizing and understanding form, without the ability to understand a pattern, the common good is out of reach. Even though gate 48 is the gate of black magic in the sense described above, it's important to understand that depth works in service of the common good. That's its nature. And it doesn't mean you go around telling someone what's good or bad for them just because you happen to know it. The point is for the other person to be able to experiment with that depth themselves and work things out on their own. That's an entirely different story.
