The third variation carries the 40/37 channel's negotiating heart most directly. Gate 37 stays open, hoping something will come along to move it; gate 40, Aloneness, answers back with something closer to: I don't need your love if it's going to cost me — is it even worth what I'll have to put in? Both of these are Ego-center gates of negotiation, and between them runs the entire deal at the center of family and community: 37 offers love, and 40 asks, quite plainly, how much of my energy is that love actually going to cost.

Because this negotiation runs through the emotional system, its terms shift with the wave — someone might understand a deal completely clearly in one moment and, a day later, need to be reminded of the very same thing, simply because the emotional system needs time to fully digest what it agreed to. One of gate 40's real difficulties is that, as the emotional wave moves on from the moment a deal was struck, the original terms of that deal can get quietly forgotten or misremembered — sometimes convincing itself the agreement was something other than what it actually was.
