Pretending to have the answer isn't necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes you take something on before you know exactly how it works, and you find the answer along the way — the role runs ahead of the knowledge, and the knowledge catches up after.

There's a particular intellectual courage in stepping in with confidence even without full certainty inside yourself, and for a lot of situations, this works well.

The risk is when the fantasy gets taken as fact — when you forget you were "playing a role" and start believing you really knew all along. Sooner or later a testing moment comes, and it can be a painful one. Honesty with yourself about what you actually know versus what you don't yet is your best insurance.
