The Cross of Explanation opens with the Sun in gate 49, Sacrifice — the gate whose deepest layer is about killing in order to eat, the raw biological principle that survival sometimes requires giving something up. From that base grows a much larger theme for this cross: revolution, the willingness to overturn a shared agreement — a tribe's principles — when it no longer serves the people living under it.

But revolutionaries built on gate 49 rarely get followers of their own. There's an old, wry line that captures it exactly: "I'll build the church, and he'll preach in it." The person who sees clearly enough to demand the sacrifice, the change, the new principle, is very often not the person who ends up leading the congregation that eventually forms around the idea. This cross gives the insight; it doesn't always give the audience.
