The real measure of success here is when the student outgrows the teacher. That's not a threat to your role; it's the entire point of teaching in the first place.
What's hard is releasing people once they've grown past what you gave them, and taking any challenge to your authority as something personal rather than a natural, healthy part of the process. Holding on too tightly turns teaching into dependency, for both of you.
