This is the Cross of Dominion, and it's about usurpation — seizing power. The mind opens a door to seizure that the body alone never could: you might be the tribe's finest specimen, but if you actually want to get ahead, you'd better have something in your head, because that's what separates you from everyone else.

First comes the programming that says you need to be physically equipped to do the work — then suddenly it shifts to the mental: 'sorry, that's not enough.' Usurpation comes from mental capacity, from awareness: if you know someone has a weakness, you can use it. Some people find that ugly, but often it's the only path available — and because this is interpersonal, it can't happen alone. Usually the person who loses power to it has, in some sense, been waiting for it — this is transpersonal, karmic.

It tells us that even when we think we've made a solid deal for community, sex, and children, someone smarter can simply take it from us. 'Want to buy the Brooklyn Bridge? Hand over your life savings.' It sounds like a cliché until you hear about the woman in Omaha who wired eighty-five thousand dollars to a stranger for lottery tickets over the phone. People lose everything this way constantly, because there is always someone ready to take power from you — that's just Darwinian reality, survival of the fittest, built into the design. Take this person on as a partner and you risk ending up their slave. Sometimes it even turns out to be an improvement. Sometimes not.
